Lesson: Helicopter ILS approach

This short section describes the recommended way to perform a ILS approach with a helicopter and FS(X)P

GENERALLY for helos:

Please set the general realism slider (FS2004 or FSX realism menu) to left position (easy) and AUTORUDDER OFF.

Choose an airport with ILS runways.

We select EDDF in this example, preselect a disgusting weather condition, so we want to fly an ILS approach to runway 25R.
ILS approach course will be around 251 deg. You are flying at 3500ft, 5 nm south of the airfield.

(1) Enter 3000 ft altitude, V/S of -200 ft/min, IAS 80 knts, press SPD, press ALT, LVL and VS
The helicopter will accelerate to 80 knts, sink and level out at 3000 ft.

(2) Approach the airport from south, and choose a heading between 360 and 270 to intersect the approach course approximately 3 nm inbound the runway. Press HDG.

(3) Type 'select EDDF 25R' into the text input field of the APPanel and press 'enter'. Press NAV.
The helicopter will continue on present heading and turn left into the ILS approach course (251) at the intersection

(4) Press 'APR' button directly after pressing NAV.
FSP will immediately begin adjusting altitude until reaching the glideslope, then sink on the slope.

Assuming you see the ground at inner marker, press AP off and manually fly to the pad -or-
deselect APR button and select HLD button (hold altitude), define a heading to the spot you want to land and press HDG.

Welcome to Frankfurt, and forget about the fog.
